What we scan
Module
M365 group enumeration filtered to Teams, lifecycle hygiene checks (orphaned teams, single-owner teams, teams unused for 180+ days), tenant external sharing capability, OneDrive Known Folder Move adoption percentage.
Module
Conditional Access policy review for the gates that govern Teams external access โ guest sharing CA, MFA enforcement, device compliance gates. Teams calls and channels inherit identity posture from these policies.
Module
Click-to-Run update channel breakdown via getM365AppUserDetail. Teams clients on Semi-Annual channel cannot render Copilot in Teams โ this catches the gap before users complain.
Why it matters
Most M365 tenants we scan have 30%+ of their teams sitting orphaned, unowned, or unused for more than six months. Each one is a SharePoint site, an Exchange group, a planner board, and a OneNote โ all indexed by Copilot, all returning stale or contradictory data when a user asks Copilot a question. The Teams sprawl problem is the hidden cost of every Copilot rollout: the AI gives users confidently-wrong answers from old project channels nobody has logged into in eighteen months.
The Teams Assessment finds three classes of problem: lifecycle waste (orphaned/unused teams that should be archived), governance gaps (external sharing capability set too permissively, no domain restrictions, no naming policy), and Copilot-readiness gaps in the Teams client itself (users on the wrong update channel can't render the Copilot ribbon at all). All three are pre-conditions for a Copilot rollout that doesn't generate help desk tickets the first day.
You also get the Conditional Access policy review for Teams-relevant gates โ MFA enforcement on Teams sign-ins, guest access controls, device compliance requirements. The Teams external sharing model is gated by Identity policies, so a "yes you can share with anyone" tenant setting is overridden if there's no MFA-required CA policy on guest tokens. The assessment surfaces both layers.
If you're a consultant delivering this for a client, the Microsoft 365 Complete Bundle at CA$1,599 includes the Teams assessment plus the other five with white-label PDF rights.
