SharePoint Migration Planning

Eight modules on planning SharePoint migrations that actually land. Every source (file shares, SharePoint Server, cross-tenant, cloud), the right tool for each, the 400-character path trap that kills every project, incremental migration semantics, cross-tenant one-and-done constraints, throttling reality (yes, it's there; no, Microsoft won't turn it off), and the four-phase cutover playbook.

Why this course exists

Every SharePoint migration project has three phases. Most projects get the third one wrong.

Assess. Migrate. Cutover. Get the first two right and the third one still lives or dies on decisions you made in week one. This course is the practitioner playbook for all three — with every claim grounded in Microsoft Learn and every gotcha you'll actually encounter.

Includes the tool decision tree (SPMT vs Migration Manager vs SharePoint Online PowerShell), the 400-character path rule + how to remediate before it kills your migration, the 100k-items-per-folder permission trap, cross-tenant migration's one-and-done constraint (with the Enterprise Agreement licensing that stops many projects at scoping), throttling reality (background apps throttled tighter during weekday daytime — plan for evenings and weekends), and the four-phase cutover playbook with rollback + validation.

By course end, you'll size a migration project accurately, pick the right tool without guessing, remediate content before it becomes a cutover crisis, and land the cutover event without users noticing.

Curriculum

Eight modules. From assessment to cutover.

Each module includes written reference, callouts for the traps, tables for the source / tool / limit matrices, PowerShell code blocks, and a knowledge-check quiz. Complete all eight plus the final exam to earn CCSMP certification.

Module 01

Foundations + the source matrix

The source matrix (six categories, tool per category, effort estimate). The three universal phases. What SPMT / Migration Manager won't do. The 400-character path rule. The 250 GB file size limit.

Module 02

Assessment + remediation

The four assessment tools (SPMT scan, SMAT with its Oct 2026 retirement, Content Management Assessment, Migration Manager cloud scans). Five risk categories to remediate. The 100k-items-per-folder permission trap. The 5,000 / 50,000 unique permissions rule. Identity mapping.

Module 03

SPMT vs Migration Manager

Feature comparison. Decision tree by source + scale. SPMT specifics (system requirements, auth methods, cert-based auth). Migration Manager specifics (agent management, 50-task cloud cap, 250 GB file limit). PowerShell 5.x only.

Module 04

File share migrations

Pre-migration prep. Incremental + cutover pattern. Delta sync vs full incremental (when to use each). File evaluation rules during incremental. Why you don't rename during migration. Permissions during file-share migration. The 0-byte file behaviour.

Module 05

SharePoint Server migrations

What SPMT migrates from SP Server. What it doesn't (master pages, InfoPath forms, custom workflows, custom content types, structure-only). Modern architecture planning (flat IA + hubs). Records management limitations. Multi-auth source problem.

Module 06

Cross-tenant SharePoint migration

What makes it different (SPO PowerShell only, one-and-done, EA-only, per-100 GB licensing). What migrates + what doesn't. Sensitivity labels + user-defined-permissions blocker. The seven-step process. Multi-geo planning. User communication. Scheduling in batches of up to 4,000.

Module 07

Performance + throttling

Throttling reality (weekday tighter, weekend looser, Microsoft won't disable it). Three bottleneck categories (source read, migration computer, connectivity). File size distribution (larger files migrate faster per byte). Task granularity for Migration Manager. Migration API queue limits (5,000 max). Diagnosing "slow migration".

Module 08

Cutover playbook + go-live

The four cutover phases. Estimating cutover duration realistically. Full-load-plus-delta pattern for large migrations. Communication cadence (T-30 through T+1 week). Validation checklist. Rollback strategy (easy for on-prem, hard for cross-tenant). Post-migration cleanup. The four go-live risks + mitigations.
