Migrate from Dropbox to SharePoint: Step-by-Step
Many organizations are consolidating from Dropbox Business to Microsoft 365. This guide covers migrating files, preserving folder structures, and handling permissions during the transition.
Why Move from Dropbox to SharePoint?
- M365 standardization — your company chose Microsoft 365 as the primary platform
- Cost reduction — eliminating a redundant file storage subscription
- Compliance — Microsoft's compliance features (DLP, retention, eDiscovery)
- Integration — seamless access from Teams, Outlook, and Office apps
What You Need
- Dropbox access — connect via Dropbox OAuth in MigrationFox
- SharePoint access — Microsoft OAuth with admin consent
- Destination site — create the SharePoint site and document library in advance
Migration Steps
1. Connect Both Platforms
In MigrationFox, add a Dropbox credential (OAuth) and a SharePoint credential (Microsoft OAuth). Both are validated automatically.
2. Discovery Scan
Run a discovery scan on your Dropbox account to understand the data volume, folder depth, and file types. This helps you plan the migration timeline.
3. Create the Migration Job
Select your Dropbox folder as source and SharePoint document library as destination. Configure concurrency (5-10 recommended for Dropbox) and enable permission migration.
4. Run and Monitor
MigrationFox streams files directly from Dropbox to SharePoint. Monitor real-time progress in the dashboard. For large migrations, jobs auto-split into concurrent partitions.
Dropbox-Specific Considerations
- Shared links — Dropbox shared links don't transfer to SharePoint. New sharing permissions are created based on Dropbox access levels.
- Team folders — Dropbox team folders map to SharePoint document libraries. Plan your library structure before migrating.
- File requests — Dropbox file request folders are treated as regular folders.
- Paper documents — Dropbox Paper files are not standard files and may require export before migration.
